Question of the Month – December 2025

December 18, 2025 - By Rachael Cowin, Associate, MA (Cantab), CEng FIMechE

Question: How can leaders reflect on their year in a way that deepens humility, gratitude, and commitment to serving their people?

Answer: Gratitude is an emotion very much worth cultivating. Studies have shown that when we feel grateful, it unlocks the best in us and makes us more generous. Leaders who regularly show gratitude spend more time thinking of others and build trust and confidence within their team.

However, as human beings, we tend to take our blessings for granted, comparing ourselves with others and ignoring the tailwinds at our back. It is therefore essential to set aside time to acknowledge and appreciate the things for which we should be thankful.

Here are some practices that have been proven to boost gratitude:

  • Take regular time out for reflection, perhaps with some prompts to guide you – what opportunities have come your way? How have colleagues and your team supported you? What are you thankful for right now?
  • Keep a note or journal to record successes of the team and individuals so that you do not forget, and can look back and track progress.
  • Think of others and take time to say thank you. The close of the year is the ideal time to acknowledge others’ contributions; consider writing personalised notes to individuals. Focus on how your team and colleagues have specifically added value, rather than on the results. Encourage others to do the same and see the impact it can have on cultivating generosity within the organisation.

Looking ahead, instead of setting unrealistic New Year’s resolutions that won’t last past mid-February, consider building in regular time for gratitude into your plans for 2026.
