About Us

A key problem facing leaders at work is to establish a sense of legitimacy for their leadership, to mobilise the consent of their people to being led by them. This only happens when leaders have a sincere and genuine concern for those in their charge and enable their people to realise the very best in themselves. In other words, managers have the right to demand delivery of their people, not because they pay them or because they are in a position of authority, but because they Care for and Grow them.

Care and Growth are the universal criteria for any Legitimate Relationship of Power.

What are the roots of the Legitimate Leadership Model?

The Legitimate Leadership Model originated from seminal research into trust in management in the South African gold mines in the late 1980s. Contrary to expectation, trust in management in the apartheid era was not consistently low, but varied immensely, both across mines and even in different shafts on the same mine. Trust in management was not found to be a function of working/living conditions, rates of pay, trade union activity, or the sophistication of the company’s human resources policies and systems. Rather, trust in management was granted or withheld on the basis of the employees’ perception of their leadership’s genuine concern for their welfare. The leadership of a mine was seen to be legitimate and worthy, or not, of support on this basis only.

Whether the management of any enterprise is trusted and viewed as legitimate, therefore, is ultimately a function of the intent of the immediate supervisor at any level in the hierarchy.

Where has the Legitimate Leadership Model been applied?

Over the past 25 years the original research findings have been applied in more than 250 diverse organisations around the world. Joe Spring

Legitimate Leadership Ambassador, Programme For Management Development, BA Geography (Hon)

Joe has over 15 years of experience in data analytics and geospatial solutions, including strategic and operational management through the COVID years. He studied management development at GIBS with two kids and a newborn in the house. He earned accolades for best syndicate and best project while achieving individual commendations for strategy, finance and innovation. Always a voracious learner, Joe added this latest qualification to his first-class Bachelor of Arts Honours in Geography and an array of short courses, including a negotiation masterclass with David Venter, Behavioural Design, and platform business design.

In Joe’s earlier career, he introduced enterprise mapping solutions in the banking sector. He managed multiple data projects for navigation systems at Nokia’s HERE division, earning him the Nokia Global Impact Award and a trip to Berlin. Later, back in South Africa, Joe became the Head of Location & Commerce Solutions at Lightstone, leading a team of specialists serving clients across retail, media, energy, and commercial property sectors. While there, he coordinated various commercial and technical teams around the design and development of SaaS applications, developing his expertise in product roadmaps and Agile methodologies. Here, he first encountered Legitimate Leadership and readily applied the principles in caring for and growing his team and peers.

Another significant career highlight is the founding of Broad and Cambridge, a consulting company which helps Southern African companies with business development strategies, location analytics, and customer value propositions.

Known for fostering strong client relationships and delivering innovative solutions, Joe is a thought leader and passionate mentor in his work and church contexts. He is committed to growing individuals and teams while driving organisational success. Indeed, his passion for meaningful results and people empowerment precipitated his appointment as an Ambassador for Legitimate Leadership offerings in the market.

In his downtime, Joe enjoys penmaking and woodwork, organising his Johannesburg workshop, reading thought-provoking books, and making his kids laugh. He also makes a mean pizza.
